A Day of Remembering
Memorial Day is a day of remembering. Remembering the men and women who made
the ultimate sacrifice in the service of and for our country. As part of his “D-day Orders of
the Day,” General Dwight D. Eisenhower stated: “I have full confidence in your courage,
devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!”
Eisenhowerʼs confidence was not misplaced. Full victory did come. But it came at a great
price. Being free and maintaining freedom has proven to be costly throughout the history
of our nation. It is good to have a day of remembering.
I am also reminded of another full victory and the price that was paid to obtain it. The full
victory that is possible over sin and death. As Jesus Christ was on the cross pouring out
His very life blood for your sins and mine, He said, “It is finished!” Then, “He bowed His
head and gave up His spirit.” (John 19:30) “It is finished” was a cry of victory - full victory.
Referring to Christʼs substitutionary death on the cross, the writer of Hebrews makes this
remarkable but true statement: “But He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time,
sat down at the right hand of God.” Hebrews 10:12) Godʼs wrath against sin was fully and
forever satisfied by the death of His Son on the cross of Calvary. How do we know?
Because God raised Him from the dead. But this victory over sin and death will only
be yours if you trust in Jesus Christ and Him alone to save you. Do so today and you will
have a day of remembering unlike any other. Remembering the One who paid the ultimate
price in order that you might have full victory. “There is salvation in no one else; for there is
no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be
saved.” (Acts 4:12)
